A man is killed when his home is blown up. A man cuts open his leg to remove a tracking device blood is shown. A man traps his coworkers in a room and shots them before killing himself.

Agents attempt to murder a woman by faking her suicide. Numerous other characters are shot, burned, beaten until bloody, attacked and chased. A character is injected with a virus. A SWAT team is sent in to kill a man. Shots are fired in public.

A chemically altered man punches another and steals his bike. A character is shot in the leg with bloody results. A man is repeatedly shot in the chest. Agent Aaron Cross Jeremy Renner is in the wilds of Alaska preparing for his next high-stakes mission.

Left with hours in isolation, he's questioning the life he has chosen. Meanwhile, Jason Bourne has been spotted in New York, and journalists are beginning to delve into the elaborate netherworld of the government's top-secret intelligence agencies. The higher-ups, led by Eric Byer Edward Norton , want to pull the plug on the entire operation -- all of it. Cross wants to untether himself from the agency, but first he needs specialized meds.

Only one person can help him get off all the pills his superiors have leashed him to: Dr. Marta Shearing Rachel Weisz , a scientist who's now a target herself. This is an often-riveting movie that manages to stand alone -- and tall, too -- referencing what came before just enough to give die-hard fans a sense of homecoming.

When news spread that Matt Damon , who bore the mantle of the first three compelling Bourne movies, wasn't going to be in this installment, many swore the franchise was dead.

Renner's Cross is a different breed of super-agent, more brawn than Bourne, more soldier than leader, but not so much of a follower that he can't stand alone. He and Marta have gone rogue, forced into it by circumstance, and we're with him most of the way. But that's not to say there aren't any quibbles: The Bourne Legacy takes its time to distance itself from the original protagonist, a necessary part of the process that nonetheless could have used some pruning.

And though there are some flashbacks, the story unfolds in a sometimes maddeningly linear way. A chase gives way to another and then another, and though it certainly makes for a breakneck, exciting pace, thrill fatigue starts to set in.

We want to get to know Cross like we did Bourne, and we don't. We won't spoil the ending, but after all that work and rush, it leaves a little something wanting. But don't worry, we're there for the next serving.

If filmmakers can entice Bourne to join Cross next time, and there's certainly room for it, the result could be perfection. Families can talk about the Bourne series. A man steals a motorcycle and he and a woman drive away as another man steals a police car and chases them; they speed through congested streets, the police car runs into another car and is pushed up onto two wheels, the car crashes into a bus and he bus bumps the motorcycle causing the passenger to nearly fall off.

A man steals a motorcycle from a police officer and chases another man and a woman on another motorcycle: they speed through pedestrians and car traffic, they go up flights of stairs, one driver is shot and falls off his motorcycle and into a fruit stand we see a bit of blood , and he gets back on the motorcycle and continues chasing; the woman on the other motorcycle hits the other driver with her helmet he is not phased , she then kicks him and he is thrown into a pillar and we see his body flop around like a rag doll.

A woman is shown dead with a stream of blood at her nose and her eyes open. A man is found dead on the street and we see his bloody nose and face. A man is shown dead and there is blood around him on the floor and it appears that his arm is twisted behind his head. A man hits a man on the back of the head and he falls to the ground among a crowd of people.

A house is soaked with gasoline and set ablaze we understand that several dead bodies are inside the house as it burns. A man shoots down an unmanned drone and we see it crash and explode in the distance. A man shoots a conveyor belt in a factory causing workers to scream and rush out of the building. A man draws blood from his arm we see the needle press into the flesh and we see the blood in a vial.

We see vials of blood on a table in a few scenes. A woman injects a solution into a man's arm we see the needle press into his skin.

A man appears to be getting very sick; we see him begin to perspire and shiver and later a woman is shown helping him with a wet cloth. We see a man with bloody cuts on his face and a bruised and swollen eye. This type of storytelling can be frustrating for some, but I lean toward it. His direction is sure and works in enough action to keep the kinetic energy on the same level as the plotting.

The film ends with the Bourne franchise signature street chase. It's as good as any in the Bourne series, starting out as a foot chase on the rooftops in Manila and ending with a virtuoso motorcycle chase between our two heroes and the 2. It is here where the movie begins to fall apart for me, however. Although, it is finely made, this chase sequence highlights the fact that everything that comes before it is fairly meaningless.

In the end, the Bourne movies are simply heavily plotted chases sequences without much substance beneath their surface. All of the set up in this movie indicates that this one might offer something more. It's frustrating to have to rate a movie like this, because the filmmakers don't really step wrong.

The casting change to Jeremy Renner and the addition of Rachel Weisz work well. The added mythology opens up the world of Treadstone and the backstory of Bourne to a satisfying degree. But, the excellent chase sequence that ends the film comes as something of a disappointment. There needs to be more to Bourne at this point.

It's time for some morality lesson to finally surface from all of this. The lesson is there. It's even hinted at in the actions of the government task force that wields such power and seems to answer to no one. It's time for some long earned closure.
